A recruiter screening fresher profiles for an IT role may look at a hundred resumes in an afternoon. Each gets a few seconds on the first pass. In that time, the recruiter is not reading your objective statement or your hobbies. They are scanning for three things: the right skills, proof you can use them, and a clean, readable layout.

This guide shows you exactly how to build that kind of resume, section by section, with example bullets and a full sample you can adapt. It is written from the screening side of the desk, so every tip is about what actually gets a resume shortlisted.

In short: one page, simple layout, no photos or graphics. Put skills and projects above education. Write project bullets that show what you built, with which technology, and what problem it solved. Tailor keywords to each job description, and save as a PDF named with your name and role.

How resumes are screened

  1. ATS (applicant tracking system): many companies use software that reads your resume and matches keywords from the job description. Complex designs, tables, text boxes and images can confuse it.
  2. Recruiter scan: a quick look for role-relevant skills, projects, internships, education criteria and contact details.
  3. Hiring manager review: deeper reading of projects and skills before the interview call.

Your resume must work for all three: machine-readable, quick to scan and deep enough to interest an engineer.

The ideal section order for IT freshers

SectionWhat to include
HeaderName, phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn URL, GitHub or portfolio link
Summary (2 lines, optional)Your target role and strongest skills, for example: "Fresher Java developer skilled in Spring Boot, REST APIs and MySQL; built two deployed full stack projects."
Technical skillsGrouped: Languages · Frameworks · Databases · Tools · Concepts
Projects2–3 projects with 2–3 bullets each, tech stack and links
Internships / experienceAny internship, freelance or part-time work, with results
EducationDegree, college, year, score; class 12 and 10 only if the company asks for them
Certifications and achievementsRelevant certifications, hackathons, coding contest ranks

Writing project bullets that get interviews

Use the formula: action verb + what you built + technology + result or challenge solved.

WeakStrong
Made an e-commerce website.Built a full stack e-commerce app with React, Node.js and MongoDB, including cart, JWT login and order history; deployed with a live demo link.
Worked on a library project in Java.Developed a library management REST API in Spring Boot and MySQL; designed 5 related tables and handled overdue fines with a scheduled job.
Did testing for a website.Wrote 60 test cases and logged 18 defects in Jira for a booking site; automated the login and search flows using Selenium with Java and TestNG.
Analysed data.Cleaned and analysed 50,000 rows of retail sales data in Python (pandas); built a Power BI dashboard showing monthly trends by region.

Only include numbers that are true and that you can explain. Interviewers will ask about every bullet. Read how to explain your project in an IT interview.

The skills section: honest and grouped

  • Group skills so they can be scanned in two seconds.
  • List only what you can discuss in an interview. If you only completed a short tutorial, leave it out or mark it as "basic".
  • Avoid rating bars ("Java 80%") and long lists of every tool you have heard of.
  • Mirror the job description’s wording where honest: if it says "REST APIs", use that phrase rather than "web services".

Mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected

  • Two or three pages for a fresher. One page is the standard.
  • Photos, date of birth, religion, marital status, father’s name. Not needed unless an employer specifically asks.
  • Generic objectives like "seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation".
  • Copied projects with no personal contribution.
  • Unprofessional email addresses.
  • Spelling errors, especially in technology names (Javascript, Github, MySql).
  • Fancy templates with columns, icons and graphics that ATS cannot read.
  • Exaggeration. Claims that fall apart in the first technical question damage trust in everything else.

More general advice: resume mistakes recruiters reject and resume with no experience.

  5. A friend has proofread it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an IT fresher resume be?

One page. Recruiters screen quickly, and a focused one-page resume with skills and projects is easier to shortlist.

What should come first on an IT fresher resume?

After the header and a short summary, put technical skills and projects before education, because they show what you can do.

Should I add a photo to my resume?

Generally no for IT roles in India unless the employer asks. It takes space and can confuse ATS software.

How many projects should a fresher include?

Two or three strong projects with clear bullets, tech stack and links are better than many small ones.

What is an ATS-friendly resume?

A simple, single-column resume with standard headings, no images or text boxes, and keywords that match the job description, so applicant tracking software can read it correctly.

Should I use a different resume for each job?

Keep one base resume and adjust the summary, skills order and project emphasis to match each job description.
