Here's the headline most job seekers missed: white-collar hiring in India jumped 14% in August 2026 compared with a year earlier. The Naukri JobSpeak index hit 3,028, up from 2,664. That's the good news.
The catch is that the growth isn't spread evenly. Some sectors are hiring hard, some are shrinking, and even among India's big cities the gap is wide. If you're job hunting this month, where you look matters as much as how good your resume is. Here are the 8 shifts that matter most right now.
1. AI Jobs Are the Fastest-Growing Roles in the Country
Hiring for AI and machine-learning roles rose 31%, and IT and information-security roles grew 32%. These aren't only jobs for coders. Banks, insurers and global companies now want people who can work with AI tools, protect data and make sense of numbers.
What to do: you don't need an AI degree. Learning to use AI tools well in your own field, whether that's customer support, finance or HR, already makes your resume stand out.
2. Non-IT Sectors Are Carrying the Market
The biggest story of 2026 is that growth isn't just about tech anymore. In August:
- Auto and auto ancillary: +19%
- Healthcare: +16%
- Retail: +15%
- Accounting and finance: +14%
- Insurance: +12%
- IT and software services: +11%
- Banking, financial services and broking: +10%
What to do: if you've only been applying to IT companies, you're looking at a fraction of the market. Healthcare, retail, insurance and finance are hiring for operations, sales, support and back-office roles too.
3. Freshers Are Back in Demand
After a tough couple of years for new graduates, hiring for candidates with up to 3 years of experience rose 15%, faster than the overall market. Senior professionals with 13 to 15 years of experience saw the biggest jump at 18%.
The squeeze is in the middle: hiring for people with 4 to 7 years of experience grew just 10%. If you're mid-career, sharpen one standout skill instead of relying on years of experience alone.
4. Southern Cities Are Leading, and Mumbai Is Slower
The city-level numbers show the widest gaps of all:
- Hyderabad: +23%
- Kolkata: +22%
- Chennai: +20%
- Bengaluru and Pune: +14% each
- Delhi-NCR: +10%
- Mumbai: +7%
What to do if you're in Mumbai: growth is slower here, not stopped. Mumbai is still one of the country's largest job markets, especially in banking, insurance and finance. Apply more widely across the Mumbai region, including Thane and Navi Mumbai, and consider remote or hybrid roles with companies based in faster-growing cities.
5. Global Capability Centres Keep Hiring
Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are offices that big international companies run in India. They grew their hiring 10% overall, with Hyderabad GCCs up 28% and Chennai up 21%. Industry reports say more than half of GCCs plan to increase hiring in the coming year, and a growing share of their open roles now ask for AI-related skills.
What to do: GCC roles often pay well and offer global exposure. Look for them under the parent company's name, since many don't advertise themselves as "GCCs".
6. Festive-Season Hiring Has Shifted Into September
This year, a larger part of the festive period falls in September rather than August. That's worth knowing because festive demand usually brings short-term and permanent roles in retail, e-commerce, logistics and customer support.
What to do: if you're looking for a quick start, especially in sales, delivery operations or customer service, apply now while companies are scaling up.
7. Where Hiring Is Slowing Down
Not every sector is growing. In August, hiring fell in:
- Media, dotcom and entertainment: −14%
- Education, teaching and training: −8%
- Legal services: −7%
- Hotels, restaurants, airlines and travel: −4%
What to do: if you work in one of these fields, your skills may transfer. A teacher's communication skills suit training and customer-success roles, and hospitality experience is valued in customer service and retail.
8. Skills Now Matter More Than Degrees
Even with more jobs on offer, employers say finding the right skills is their biggest hurdle. Around 1 in 4 GCCs call a mismatch in candidate quality their top hiring problem, particularly in AI, cloud and product roles. That's why more companies are testing what you can actually do, not just where you studied.
What to do: build proof of your skills, such as a certificate, a small project or a portfolio, and put it at the top of your resume.
What This Means for Your Job Search
- Look beyond IT. Healthcare, retail, auto, insurance and finance are all growing faster than or as fast as tech services.
- Add one AI-related skill to your profile, even at a basic level.
- Freshers, now is a good time to apply widely, since entry-level hiring is growing faster than the market.
- Widen your location search if you're in a slower-growing city.
- Move fast on festive-season roles this month.
