You've cleared the test or the technical round, and now the recruiter says, "Next is your HR round." Many candidates relax at this point and think the hard part is over. That is exactly why so many people get rejected here.

The HR round is short and friendly, but it decides whether you get the offer. Here is what it is, what happens in it, and how to answer the questions HR asks most often.

Quick answer: the HR round is the interview with the company's Human Resources team. It checks whether you fit the company and the job in practical terms: your communication, attitude, stability, salary expectation, notice period, shift comfort and location. It is not a formality. Candidates who are strong in other rounds can still be rejected here.

HR full form and what HR does in hiring

HR stands for Human Resources. In hiring, the HR team manages the whole process: they screen resumes, arrange interviews, talk about salary, make the offer and handle your joining. In the HR round, they look at you as a future employee, not only as someone with the right skills.

What happens in an HR round

Most HR rounds take 10 to 20 minutes and follow a similar flow:

  1. Introduction: "Tell me about yourself."
  2. Your background: education, past jobs or internships, and any gaps.
  3. Motivation: why this job, and why this company.
  4. Practical checks: shift timings, location, travel time, notice period and joining date.
  5. Salary: your current salary (if any) and what you expect.
  6. Your questions: a chance for you to ask about training, growth and the team.

HR round vs other rounds

  • Technical, test or operations rounds check whether you can do the job.
  • The HR round checks whether you will do the job well and stay: attitude, honesty, stability and fit.

Some companies hold the HR round first as a quick screening, and some keep it for the end. For BPO hiring, there is often an HR screening at the start and a final HR discussion at the end. See our guide to the BPO interview process.

Common HR round questions and how to answer them

1. "Tell me about yourself."

Keep it under two minutes: who you are now, what you have done, and why you want this role. Do not repeat your whole resume. Our guide on how to answer "Tell me about yourself" has sample answers for freshers.

2. "Why do you want this job?"

Connect the job to your strengths. For example: "I enjoy talking to people and solving problems, and customer support lets me do both every day."

3. "Why should we hire you?" (for freshers)

Pick two or three real strengths and give a small proof for each, such as a college project, part-time work or helping in a family business.

4. "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

Give one honest weakness and what you are doing about it. "I used to get nervous speaking in groups, so I joined a speaking club in college" works far better than "I am a perfectionist."

5. "Are you comfortable with rotational or night shifts?"

Answer honestly. If you say yes and cannot manage it, you will struggle after joining. If you have a limit, say it clearly and politely.

6. "What salary do you expect?"

Research the usual range first and give a reasonable figure. For BPO roles, see our BPO salary guide for Mumbai. Experienced candidates can read how to negotiate your salary.

7. "When can you join?"

Give a clear date. If you are working, mention your notice period honestly.

8. "Do you have any questions for us?"

Always ask one or two, for example: "How long is the training?" or "What does growth look like in this team after one year?"

Mistakes that get candidates rejected in the HR round

  • Not being honest about shifts, gaps or the last salary. HR often checks these later.
  • Speaking badly about a previous employer or college.
  • Asking only about salary and leave and nothing about the work.
  • A very unrealistic salary figure with no reason behind it.
  • Seeming unsure whether you really want the job.

Quick checklist before your HR round

  • Two copies of your resume, ID proof and education certificates
  • A 60-second answer to "Tell me about yourself", practised out loud
  • A clear salary figure and a joining date
  • Two questions to ask at the end
