Quick answer: a customer service executive answers customer questions and fixes problems by phone, email or chat. Most openings need clear spoken English and some need a Versant or SVAR score. Salaries generally range from about ₹17,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the process, experience and shift.

Types of customer service jobs

  • Inbound voice: customers call you with questions or problems, such as a banking or account query.
  • International voice: serving customers in the US or UK, often on US night shifts. See our international voice process guide.
  • Email and back office: answering customer emails and handling requests in writing, with no calls.
  • Chat support: helping several customers at once in a chat window. See voice vs non-voice jobs.
  • Domain roles: banking, healthcare and insurance customer service, each with its own product knowledge.

What customer service jobs pay

Customer service salaries generally range from about ₹17,000 to ₹60,000 a month. Where you land in that range depends on:

  • The process: domestic or international, voice or non-voice
  • Your experience and role level, from executive to senior
  • English and test scores, such as Versant or SVAR
  • Shifts: night and 24/7 roles usually pay more
  • The domain: banking, healthcare, insurance and other areas have different pay levels

This is a general range, not a guarantee. Your pay depends on the company, your skills and your interview.

  • Typing and system speed, because you search records while you talk
  • Shift flexibility, as many processes run 24/7 with rotational offs
  • Accuracy, especially in banking roles

Tests you may face

  • Versant: an automated spoken-English test used to check how clearly you speak.
  • SVAR: another spoken-English test. International roles often ask for a minimum SVAR score.
  • Typing and written tests: especially for email and back-office roles.
  • HR and operations rounds: see our BPO interview process guide.

10 customer service interview questions to practise

  1. Why do you want a customer service job? Talk about enjoying helping people and solving problems, not just needing a job.
  2. How would you handle an angry customer? Stay calm, let them finish, apologise for the problem, then move to the fix.
  3. What would you do if you don't know the answer? Say you will check, use the knowledge base or ask a senior, and never guess.
  4. Are you comfortable with night or rotational shifts? Be honest. Employers check this early.
  5. Tell me about a time you helped someone. Use a short real example with a clear result.
  6. What does good customer service mean to you? Solving the problem fully, politely, in the first contact if possible.
  7. How do you handle pressure? Mention staying organised and taking one call at a time.
  8. What is your typing speed? Give your actual speed, and say you can improve it.
  9. Why did you leave your last job? Keep it positive and about growth.
  10. Where do you see yourself in 2 years? A senior executive or team leader, for example.

How to grow in a customer service career

Many people start as a customer service executive, move to senior executive, then to a team leader or quality role. Domain skills such as banking, healthcare or insurance help you move faster and earn more.
