If you're considering a career in BPO, one of the first decisions you'll face is voice versus non-voice. They're both valid, well-paying entry points — but they suit very different strengths.
What Is a Voice Process?
Voice roles involve direct phone conversations with customers — inbound support, outbound sales or collections, or technical helplines. International voice processes often run night shifts to match overseas time zones, while domestic voice roles typically run standard daytime hours.
What Is a Non-Voice Process?
Non-voice roles handle customer interactions through chat, email, or back-office work like data processing, documentation, and claims handling — with no phone conversations involved.
What Is Domestic and International Voice Process?
A domestic voice process means you handle calls from customers in India, usually in English, Hindi or a regional language such as Marathi, mostly during day shifts. An international voice process means you handle calls from customers abroad, such as the US, UK or Australia, in English, often on night shifts to match their time zones. International roles usually pay more but need stronger spoken English.
Skills Each One Rewards
- Voice: Clear spoken English, a neutral or trained accent for international accounts, quick thinking, and patience under pressure.
- Non-voice: Strong written English, typing speed and accuracy, attention to detail, and comfort working through repetitive, process-driven tasks.
Shift Timings and Pay
International voice roles often pay a premium for night shifts due to the demanding hours. Non-voice and domestic voice roles more commonly run standard shifts, which can matter a lot depending on your personal situation and commute.
Voice roles often pay a little more than non-voice ones at the same level, because they are harder to fill, and sales or collections roles add incentives on top. For actual figures, see our BPO salary guide for Mumbai.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you're energized by talking to people and can stay calm during a difficult call, voice process work can be genuinely rewarding and often opens faster paths into team lead roles. If you prefer working independently through a queue of tasks with less real-time pressure, non-voice may suit you better.
