It usually starts with a message: "Work from home, earn ₹1,500 a day, no experience needed." A quick chat follows, then a job "confirmation", and then a request: "Just pay ₹500 registration to get started."

Work-from-home BPO jobs do exist. But fake ones are everywhere, and they target exactly the people who need a job most. Here's how to tell the difference, before you lose money or personal details.

Are real work-from-home BPO jobs available?

Yes. Some companies hire remote staff for chat support, email support and voice roles. Genuine ones still follow a proper hiring process, and they usually expect you to have a laptop, a stable internet connection and a quiet place to work. There are fewer remote openings than office-based ones, and many go to candidates who already have some experience.

8 warning signs of a fake job

  1. They ask you to pay. A registration fee, training fee, kit charge or security deposit is the clearest sign of a scam. Genuine employers never charge candidates.
  2. No real interview. You are "selected" after a short chat, with no proper interview round.
  3. Pay that's too good to be true. ₹500 to ₹2,000 a day for simple typing, form filling or liking videos.
  4. "Earn per task, but invest first." Paying to unlock tasks or recharge an account is a common Telegram scam.
  5. Contact only on WhatsApp or Telegram. No company email, no office address, no official website.
  6. A personal email address. Offers sent from Gmail or Yahoo instead of a company's own email domain.
  7. Pressure to decide now. "Only 2 seats left, pay today to confirm."
  8. They ask for OTPs or banking details. No employer needs your OTP, UPI PIN or card details to hire you.

How genuine remote jobs work

  • You go through proper interview rounds, often by phone or video.
  • You receive a written offer from the company's official email address.
  • The role, salary, shift timings and joining process are clearly explained.
  • You never pay anything at any stage.

The 5-minute check before you accept any offer

  1. Search the company name online, along with words like "scam" or "fraud".
  2. Find the company's official website and check its careers page.
  3. Call the company on the number listed on its official website, not the number that contacted you.
  4. Never pay any money, however small.
  5. Ask a trusted consultancy. We'll happily check an offer for you.

If you think you've been scammed

  • Stop paying immediately, even if they promise a refund after "one last payment".
  • Call the national cyber crime helpline, 1930, as soon as possible.
  • Report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Inform your bank if you shared card or account details.
